Pot odds compare the current pot size to the cost of a call. If your equity (chance of winning) exceeds the pot odds required, calling is profitable.

Counting Outs
An out is a card that completes your drawing hand. With 9 outs (flush draw) on the flop, you have ~35% equity to hit by the river.
